Een digitale baan is niets zonder een digitale centrale. De centrale zorgt voor de aansturing van de loc's, treinstellen en/of treinen, wissels en seinen op de baan. Een "centrale" (de naam zegt het al) is alles in één; deze heeft meestal twee (soms één) regeldraaiknoppen om twee treinen/locomotieven te bedienen.
Met een centrale, twee stroomdraadjes naar de rails en een loc met ingebouwde locdecoder kunnen we al gaan rijden.
Dit in tegenstelling tot een digitale interface welke randapparatuur nodig heeft om te kunnen rijden.

Naast de fabriekscentrales, zijn er ook zelfbouw-centrales en software-centrales.
