Bij het grootspoor rijden de locs, motorrijtuigen, treinstellen en treinen met verschillende snelheden. Ook op onze modelbaan dient het [[Woorden - M#Materieel|materieel]] een snelheid te hebben die overeenkomt met de werkelijkheid. Het is geen gezicht wanneer een goederentrein met de snelheid van een TGV over onze modelbaan dendert. We moeten er daarom voor zorgen dat ons materieel met gepaste snelheid rijdt.<br />

Bij het grootspoor rijden de locs, motorrijtuigen, treinstellen en treinen met verschillende snelheden. Ook op onze modelbaan dient het materieel een snelheid te hebben die overeenkomt met de werkelijkheid. Het is geen gezicht wanneer een goederentrein met de snelheid van een TGV over onze modelbaan dendert. We moeten er daarom voor zorgen dat ons materieel met gepaste snelheid rijdt.
In onderstaande tabel staan de snelheden van divers materieel in werkelijkheid vermeld, en tevens de daarbij behorende schaalsnelheden. Daarbij moeten we nog rekening houden met NEM 661 (zie: "Download"), waarin gesteld wordt dat de schaalsnelheden nog moeten worden gecorrigeerd, omdat modeltreinen op het oog te langzaam lijken te rijden. Die factor is voor schaal H0 1,4 x, voor schaal N 1,6 x de berekende schaalsnelheid.
